'Bin Laden's army of terrorists' “ a 'genuine threat'
On this Sunday 7 November 2005 BBC News will broadcast from the roof top of the UN headquarters in New York City to the people of Afghanistan on a story that will go far beyond the headlines: the story of British and American and Canadian intelligence gathering for the terrorist organization "Al-Qaeda". It is about to be broadcast for the first time in Britain today - as a new TV drama from the producer of "The Deuce" and the producer of the current UK series of "The Newsroom" entitled "Osama bin Laden and the New American Century". This is the story of the world's largest terrorist organization of the last 50 years and that it is now a genuine threat to the very existence of Western civilisation.
It was revealed in 2005 by British intelligence that bin Laden was behind the 1995 bombings of the World Trade Centre in New York - an event that killed 6,000 people - and it was claimed he planned to carry out an attack on Washington, D.C. in August 1996 - an incident which he would have hoped to avoid.
This week we will be hearing about the "Operation Bali" of 2002 in which the Bush administration and British and American intelligence agencies played two roles in the attempted murder of Bali's prime minister, Suharto, a prime target for terrorist attacks on behalf of Osama bin Laden.
That same year Bin Laden was accused of killing over 200 people in New York, the Pentagon, the Pentagon headquarters in Arlington, Virginia and the White House, where he was trying to recruit members to carry out his violent campaign against America and its allies and the Islamic republic of Afghanistan. There are no official charges and no evidence has emerged against Osama bin Laden or his network. In 2006 his former aide, Abdullah El-Shater, was convicted of leading a plot to blow up a flight from America to China on 19 May.
The recent book "Bin Laden and the Rise of the Islamic State" by Jonathan Steele is based on the testimony of US intelligence officers who were in contact with US forces who were in a state of heightened alert in 2002 at that time after the 9/11 attacks. The book's author states that: "As the intelligence services were aware that Al-Qaeda was looking for targets for its violent extremist network, they decided to take a page from Osama bin Laden's book and develop a detailed list of targets". Steele says: "Osama bin Laden created and orchestrated a series of terrorist attacks against innocent people in every country on the planet, to demonstrate the dominance and power of the Muslim world over its Christian and Jewish neighbours"
