Gilchrist symonds power australia to waca win 2014 World Cup qualifier WACA

The new player was introduced to the players during training on Monday.

"I don't know that I spoke to <manager> Michael Dell on the phone - I just spoke to Brad - but Brad had just been out on the pitch talking to young boys about what they had been up against, their futures and what they have had to go through.

"It was quite emotional talking to him.

"We wanted to help him out and we knew that he would have a different opinion from our first-team group because they had played on Saturday.

"He took me out on the pitch and told me I should start tomorrow, because there wasn't any pressure for me to play, it was just about helping me feel comfortable and getting off the pitch, and I was happy."

Asked whether he felt "embarrassed", Dell smiled.

"It wasn't anything that was uncomfortable for us. It was just that you come in as a new player, to a club like WACA, and have to prove yourself against them and get the job done."

He continued: "They did well yesterday and will be a tough team for us.

"I think it's good because they put us into the World Cup qualifiers against England and New Zealand, and they are probably the only team who have come out and had good performances - they've been the only team who are competing for silverware, so we need to play well against them to be confident going into the next two matches."

Records tumble at masters games in the World Cup, but one stands out for the most damning comments.

In a letter to former players he published online over the weekend, Wayne Rooney said his comments were "ridiculous", even though they are correct about their own role during a tournament.

England captain Phil Jagielka, speaking out over the weekend to deny that the England side got any bad news, also said Rooney had misjudged his role, and should have kept a more calm voice.

But this does not appear to be the case for England manager Roy Hodgson or for other players, and in fact, a number of them agreed.

"I hope I don't have to say it," the former Manchester United striker Bobby Zamora said of Rooney's comments. "If he (Rooney) thought you (coaches) weren't playing, if he felt like there were errors then we're not playing and you're not doing anything, then I think you should take the blame for that.

"If you come to a game knowing that, he should be the same as I would be. You're saying to him, 'I've been here before and I'm playing it the same way'.

"He should have been more direct and to be honest I think he should have kept his head down."

'Dirty tricks'

The Daily Telegraph has learned that Rooney, who recently won the EPL's Golden Boot, has not told referees he does not like referees in the same way that he thinks managers play their games.

Rooney's comments come after former Arsenal and Chelsea coach Roy Hodgson described the England manager's handling of games as "dirty tricks"

"This will cause many problems at the World Cup - perhaps not the biggest because they do happen with only one or two players who are a bit lucky and they don't play on the same pitch. But a problem in itself, it will make things interesting and it could be very dangerous in some clubs' games.

"If I am playing to the media like Wayne is doing, I think that will be a bad thing, if we come down to the World Cup with it, the media will come off the bus because they think that is how you play the game if you like it dirty. We just need to be aware of that and understand the need to be on the back foot."

One former club player suggested that Hodgson could have done more to make the points about referees.

"I know he did that to his team against Uruguay (last summer)," he said. "It was disgusting, and he couldn't tell them that (he does not like to) or take care of that.

"He should have know
