Uninvited helicopter anger-shoots at US helicopter

Djamel Azzam, a police officer in Kuwait told Gulf News that three members of the Kuwaiti security force on duty on the day in question were injured and required emergency hospital care when they got into a helicopter with an Iraqi driver.

In a statement, the Kuwaiti authorities confirmed the incident but did not immediately provide details.

According to the media reports, the driver of the private helicopter was being investigated.

The Saudi embassy in Kuwait responded to a request from Gulf News with a statement that it was "deeply troubled by the shooting incident that took place".

According to a statement on its website, it received the call "in response to the reporting of this report on a helicopter in firefight".

'Racialized' threats

US embassy in Kuwait says they were "shocked to hear of the recent violent incidents on US soil".

"The embassy would have to address the incident as it would clearly be an incident that would have been racially motivated in nature," the statement read.

According to the embassy statement, the incident in the United Arab Emirates, which came a week after the Paris attacks, was particularly disturbing.

The embassy said its staff had been warned that any incidents of harassment or assaults were "highly likely to escalate and threaten the safety of our diplomats, employees and others".

US officials have since been in touch with Kuwait to help them deal with the matter, the statement continued.

A Saudi Embassy spokesman said Kuwaiti authorities had yet to speak with the US about the incident.

The attack in Kuwait comes days after a Saudi court handed down a life sentence on a Saudi man accused of insulting the prophet Mohamed and sentenced the other man in turn to 20 years in prison.

The other man, a local man, was convicted of insulting the holy man after attempting to get an earlier man to leave his home by throwing stones at him and shouting that he should "disbelieve in God".

Al Jazeera's David Brumbaugh in Washington, reporting from Kuwait, said this may prove difficult for the new Kuwaiti authorities to deal with.

"The US is very clear that the Saudi and UAE governments have to understand and get a sense of why these attacks happen and, obviously, Kuwaiti authorities are not happy about this," he said.

"I think that we'll see this as a challenge and an opportunity for the new government here, so the new government here has the chance to respond to this very quickly, even while that crisis is not in the news."

Ghostrock vinyard wins international trophy

Newcastle fans had their sights set on another domestic league title but failed to reach it after another dismal season.

The St James' Park club's record winless run is 13 games and has been broken twice this season by former club Manchester United in the first round.

The game between Newcastle and Chelsea on Saturday will mark their final match without a league title since the 1995/96 season.

They were beaten 4-1 by Norwich City in a previous home game last Saturday, which means they have reached the FA Cup final in a record 30 out of 32 seasons at St James' Park.

Newcastle's winless run at St James' Park, in comparison, is 19 years and a record 34 out of 33 matches.

However, a win against Chelsea in the final would take them into the final against Real Madrid in the Champions League, with a record 38 of 39 league games remaining.

Newcastle were beaten by Everton 1-0 last week, by West Ham 2-1 in late August, by Sunderland 1-1 in September, by Burnley 2-1 in September, by Tottenham 2-1 and a 2-1 loss to Stoke at Wembley last weekend.

Newcastle were beaten 2-1 by Stoke by a goal-line penalty on 1 August

The win over Everton will see Newcastle return to the European knockout phase for the first time since 1997 and, according to the official Twitter account, will be their last appearance in the competition.

The club's record number of consecutive winless league campaigns has already eclipsed the record for the first time since 2006, at 14 out of 16 (in fact, when Newcastle started 0-9 in 1998, the last time they reached the knockout stages was 17 years ago).

A year ago, their record of just 25 league defeats and 15 draws was their most since the 1990-91 season.

Newcastle had been knocked out of the Europa League this season by Fulham and Southampton - their two last meetings before Christmas - and now face Barcelona and Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Fulham's win over Newcastle in the Premier League

"Newcastle are one of the most successful teams in the league, and their ability to maintain their excellent form at home to the best clubs in Europe has taken them straight into the Europa League quarter-finals," said John Carver, managing director of the League Two club.

"But, like us, they also must face a tougher challenge in the Champions League last 16.

"A defeat is a setback but a point for us is very important, while, if we can go out and win, we are confident we will go one better and progress to the final.
